Libreoffice vs. Microsoft Office (House plan)

Again we are going to explain some differences between Libreoffice and Microsoft Office but this time showing a real example. We draw the plan of the same house first on Excel from Microsoft and then using Calc which is from Libreoffice. This are the main differences between doing the plan on Excel or Calc:
  • The biggest difference between them is that on Excel you can turn the objects to make them face one side or anorther, but in Calc you can't do that, each object has to be facing the same side the whole time and you can not change that. As you can see in the second picture the bathtub and couch (in the second floor) have not the same position as in the first one because of what we have just explained.
  • Also when we used excel we had to make just one door and then change its size or position deppending on the place we wanted it to be, but as you can see when we used Calc we couldn't do that, because doors were not as good and it takes a lot longer to do every single one of the doors in the plan each one with its own size and position.
  • In the first one the difference between walls' and windows' lines is not too noticeable but in the second plan it's even more difficult to know where a window starts or a wall finishes.
  • Another big difference is that when you draw for example a couch you need to put together to rectangles and then group them together so that you can move then as a couch and not as two separate rectangles, that is possible if you are dealing with Excel but not with Calc. This disadvantage causes precision mistakes when drawing objects which should be the same size and shape.
  • Finally the last difference that we found was that Excel has some geometrical figures that Calc doesn't have and also the ones that it already has, as you can see in the circled bed on the second drawing.
In conclusion, for us it was easier to work on Excel because it has less disadvantages and then it looks better than using Calc, so for this kind of drawings we recomend Excel over Calc.

Mirosoft Office vs. Libreoffice.

The following text explains some advantages and disadvantages of Microsoft Office and Libre Office as the previous one, but this time we are going to base our ideas on another person's opinion which you can see in the link below:

In this video there's a girl who explains Microsoft Office's advantages: It has most Office productivity tasks like for example, Document production, Spreadsheet formulation, multimedia presentation programs etc... She also says that its document format is the most commonly used.

She also explains some of the main advantages of Libreoffice like for example that it is free and available for Windows, Mac and Linux. It has Writer which is not too different from Microsoft's Word, Spreadsheet program similar to Excel, Impress multimedia presentation program which is similar to the PPT that we can find in Microsoft, also we can find Draw which is a diagram and sketch program as well as Math which is an ecuation editor and even more things.

However Microsoft has few disadvantages like the following ones: Obviously the main one is the fact that it is expensive and it gets even more as you buy extra things that are free in Libreoffice, she also says that it doesn't play well with all proprietary document formats and it has many different stability issues.
On the other hand we have Libreoffice which also has some disadvantages but lot less, the main one is that it can cause problems when dealing with very complexed tasks but it usually doesn't.

In conclusion, what this video says is that Libreoffice is a better option because it is almost the same as Microsoft but with less disadvantages, it is an incredible usefull tool, it can do few things that Microsoft can't and all this for free!

Differences between Microsoft Office and LibreOffice.

An Office Suite is a set of programs that includes, among others, the following tools: Spreadsheet, Word Processor, Database manager, and Presentations software.

Below we are going to explain the differences between Microsoft Office and Libreoffice which are two different office suites. The main differences are the following ones:

  • LibreOffice is a free software program. You, as a user, have rights to study the source code, modify it, and share it with others.
  • On the other hand, Microsoft Office is a proprietary software. This type of license contains an extensive list of activities which are restricted like redistribute, obtain the source code or modify it.
  • Microsoft Office is not free. You have to pay to use it. You can pay once or an annually fee. Also you have to pay to update it with a new version.
  • LibreOffice is usually developed in a collaborative way. There are programmers who spend their free time in collaborate developing this software. There are no contractual support for the users. Errors are solved by forums of developers. There are no a big company with funds to support the product.
  • While, Microsoft Office has a support team who solves the errors of the application.
  • In both cases, the license terms are documents with several pages and with a lot of legal terms.

  • LibreOffice license can be read at http://www.libreoffice.org/download/license/
  • Microsoft Office license can be read at  http://www.microsoft.com/en-US/download/details.aspx?id=13653
